What Is Batting Wool?
Batting wool is more coarse and textured than colourful roving. It’s made from loosely layered fibres that felt quickly and hold structure extremely well. This makes it ideal for the inside of larger projects—animals, dolls, trees, pebbles, seasonal figures, and anything needing a firm inner base. Natural lanolin remains in the wool, leaving it soft and nourishing for your hands.
Why We Use It
Batting wool creates a strong, stable core without using up your fine roving. It forms the body of your project while the colourful wool is used for layering, shaping, and detail.
How to Use Your Needles
• Always poke straight up and down to avoid bending or breaking your needle.
• Use small, controlled movements—felting is gentle repetition, not force.
• Turn your project as you work to keep shapes even.
• Always felt on a foam block or felting pad.
Working With Wool
• Pull wool apart gently to create thin, airy layers before felting.
• Avoid large chunks—a little wool goes a long way.
• Build slowly for smooth, controlled shaping.
• Use batting wool for the core, then layer roving on top for colour and texture.
